Summer 2002

Updated 8/26/2002

We traveled to California to: (1) see our grandchildren, son, daughter-in-law, and relatives, (2) to visit national parks on the way there and back, and to try living in the Roadtrek for a three month period. We drove a total of  9667 miles and got slightly more than 15 miles per gallon with the Roadtrek; the fuel cost ranged from about $1.30 per gallon to $1.80 per gallon. We traveled over all kinds of roads, from interstate highways to gravel roads that made it seem like we were driving over a washboard. We were gone a total of 3 months and 3 days and slept in the Roadtrek every night, except for a total of about 7 nights when we were visiting relatives.

Route:   Our actual route to California is shown in blue. The general route is through Kansas to southern Colorado, into Utah to see the Arches  and Canyonlands national parks, on to Grand Canyon, both south and north rim, We then made our way through Nevada to Las Vegas, down to Barstow, CA and up to Merced. After the funeral in San Jose, we headed for my son's place at Travis AFB and have used it as a home base from which to make trips to Santa Rosa and the north coast, Hayward, San Jose, Yosemite, Aptos (near Santa Cruz), Crater Lake N.P. in Oregon, and Lassen N.P. Our trip back home took us to Lake Tahoe, Reno, Salt Lake City, north to Idaho, into Montana, back to Idaho, the Tetons, Yellowstone, Devil's Tower, through the Badlands in South Dakota, and finally to Wisconsin.
