The Tetons

Aug. 12-17, 2002

We arrived at Grand Teton National Park about 3 PM on Monday, Aug. 12, and was pleasantly surprised to find that campsites were still available at Colter Bay. We spent the next few days touring around the park, doing some short hikes, and a float trip on the Snake River. It was nice to stay in one place for a while and not drive so much. It was also a chance to work on my photography.

Part of the Teton range. Grand Teton is the highest peak. The Snake River is in the forground.

The northern part  of the Teton range and Jackson Lake. Mt. Moran is the highest peak in the picture. Jackson Lake is very low due to a drought the last 3 years.

A pair of trumpeter swans in Swan Lake (well-named). While setting here having lunch and watching the swans, a moose wandered by, and we spotted an eagle in a tree on the opposite shore. It was a real wildlife treat.

We took a supper float trip on the Snake river. The float trip was a lot of fun, and the dinner was pretty good also. We would have liked to have seen more wildlife, but you pay your money and take your chances; the animals don't perform on cue. We did see eagles, osprey, and beaver.

Camping in the 21st century. Our Roadtrek, being dwarfed by these monsters, is that little vehicle at the end of the lane. Whatever happened to tent camping?
