Off to See the Grandkids in Michigan

June 13 - July 9, 2006

We headed to Michigan to take the grandkids camping. On the way we stopped at the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, which is at the southern end of Lake Michigan. Winds from the north blow up some rather large sand dunes along the lakeshore.

Mount Baldy is a 125 foot high sand dune which provides a view of industrialized northern Indiana and Chicago.

The dune towers over trees and is, in fact destroying them as it migrates southward. According to the park service the dune is moving about 5 feet per year.

We arrived in Lapeer and had the opportunity to watch Alex and Zack in their karate class. Alex has progressed to the purple belt level.

Alex is practicing his kicks.

Zack is not about to miss out on karate, and has progressed to the yellow belt level.

Alex showing me his cub scout shirt. He has reached the bear rank.

Zack is showing off his new superman costume. It uses a fan to inflate the suit so that Zack looks like he has enormous muscles. Ah, the eternal appeal of superheroes.

We headed off on a camping trip with Alex. Follow the link to see what we did.

After that  it was  Zack's turn to go camping with us.. Then we returned home by way of the Upper Peninsula, which allowed us to complete the Lake Michigan circle tour.
