Camping with Alex

June 18-23, 2006

We headed for Lakeport State Park, which is on Lake Huron, about 10 miles north of Port Huron. We camped there last year with Alex and enjoyed it very much, so we headed back there again.

Last year Alex had training wheels on his bike; they were removed this spring. The campground provided a good place for Alex to work on his bicycle skills. He spent most of the time riding his bike and is doing very well. What a difference a year makes!

The playground was a great attraction last year, but didn't get much notice from Alex until almost the end of his time at the campground.

Toasting marshmallows on the campfire to make s'mores is always popular.

M'mm, these really taste good!

When it was time to put out the fire, Alex decided to show off his fire-putting out skills. First he filled his mouth with water ...

and then proceeded to douse the fire (Thar she blows!). After a few tries at this, he gave up and poured the water on the fire.

It was mostly a week away from video games. When we had rainy weather, I relented and let him play Sudoku on my computer. He is very good at it.

The state park runs an explorer program for children. This activity was building bird calls with popsicle sticks, a rubber band, and a blade of grass. Despite a lot of effort, none of the bird calls attracted any birds. I guess Michigan birds are too smart for that.
