"Loosey-Goosey" Extension to the UP
Day One - Sault St. Marie
Crossing the Mackinac Bridge bridge from the lower peninsula to the
upper peninsula. Opened in 1957, it is five miles long and the
roadway is 200 feet above the water. I would not want to drive it
during high winds.
Our campground in Sault St. Marie was right on the St. Mary's River.
The other shore is in Canada.
Lake freighters heading out of, or in to, Lake Superior would pass
right by our campground. Those are impressive ships to watch, with the
larger ones being about a thousand feet long.
We took a dinner cruise on the river in a very similar to the one
above. This is when we were entering the Canadian locks.
The locks have raised us to the upstream level and the gates are
opening, allowing us to head upstream in the St. Mary's River.
As the cruise ended and we were heading downstream back to the dock, we
used the American locks, which are much larger. Commercial traffic uses
the American locks, while recreational traffic uses the Canadian locks.
