Day Three - Mackinac Island
The next day the group drove to Mackinaw City to catch the boat to
Mackinac (pronounced "Mackinaw") Island. The jet of water
out the back of the boat and into the air is just for show, and has
nothing to do with
the boat propulsion.
The primary means of transportation on Mackinac Island are bicycles and
horse-drawn wagons or carriages.
We have heard several times that the only motorized vehicles on the
island are emergency vehicles. It turns out that is not quite true.
They do bring trucks and other motorized construction equipment on to
the island when needed.
We were treated to an interesting tour of the island, riding on a
horse-drawn wagon.
The Grand Hotel is an old and elegant hotel. If you have to ask how
much it costs to stay here, you can't afford it. But it is a nice place
to visit during the day.
The buffet lunch at the Grand Hotel is an unforgettable experience.
The long porch is a great place to sit after lunch and watch the boat
traffic on the lake.
Back in Petoskey, the after-dinner campfires were very enjoyable. Noel
brought out the fixings for "some more's", which didn't do much to help
counteract the fact that we had stuffed ourselves at lunch in the Grand
Hotel.
