Tony Grove
July 8-10, 2013

We stopped at the Forest Service office in Logan, UT to see what camping possibilities there were in Logan canyon. They told us about Tony Grove, which is at the end of a side road and near a wilderness area. The area is good for wildflowers, and at an altitude of 8,000 feet it should be considerably cooler than what we experienced in Salt Lake City. So off we went to Tony Grove.

Tony Grove Lake is a very picturesque glacial lake enlarged by a small earthen dam. Motorized boats are not allowed. The term "Tony" has an interesting origin; the area was a popular recreation spot for upper society people in the Logan area in the late 19th century. At that time socialites or "jetsetters" were called "tonies". Hence the name, "Tony Grove".

As promised, there were plenty of wildflowers in the open meadows near the lake.

Indian Paintbrush is one of my favorite wild flowers.

We think this is Mountain Gentian; at least that is the best match with what is in our wildflower guidebook.

This bee is busy doing its thing in this Wild Rose.

Another favorite is the Colorado Columbine; it is absolutely georgeous.
