Lake
Yellowstone and part of the Absaroka Mountains. After a lot of cloudy
weather in the Tetons, it was nice to have sunshine and clear blue
skies.
Buffalo
could be seen almost anywhere. This one came up and nudged the calf,
which was laying down. It was sort of like momma was saying, "Come on!
Let's get going."
We
even spotted a couple of wolves hunting in the Hayden Valley. We showed
the picture to a ranger later, who confirmed that these were indeed
wolves and not coyotes; he said they were from the Canyon pack. It was
the first time we had seen wolves in the wild, so it was a real treat
for us.
This
bull bufflao was having lunch right next to the parking lot at the
picnic area where we had lunch. So getting this photo was really easy.
The
Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, which the boys renamed, "The Yellow
Rock Ditch". The Yellowstone River enters the canyon by passing over
two falls; the lower falls, which is the larger of the two, is visible
at the upper end of the canyon.
The Lower Falls seen from a vantage point near the falls. The drop is 110 feet. (Photo courtesy of Alex.)
The canyon seen from the brink of the Lower Falls. When the sun shines, the spray from the falls makes a very nice rainbow.
Our two grandkids playing around. They get along with each other very well.
Zack is quite the monkey.
A
bull elk eyeing us cautiously. Cow elk are easily seen near our
campground, but most of the bulls should be up in the mountains getting
ready for the rutting season, so we were surprised to see this one in
the meadow grazing on the grasses.
We decided to finish our trip to Yellowstone by taking Grandma to dinner at the Old Faithful Inn.
Watching Old Faithful erupt from the balcony of the Old Faithful Inn.
Dinner at the Old Faithful Inn. Nancy and I had the very pleasant company of two young gentlemen for this meal.
A tuckered out boy at the end of a long day in Yellowstone.
On
our way leaving Yellowstone, we finally saw a bear; it was a grizzly
digging in the ground for food. Our trip to Yellowstone is now complete!
Next stop: Devils Tower National Monument.
