Grand Canyon National Park
June 9-12, 2011

After three days of driving from St. Louis, we arrived at the Grand Canyon National Park. Maybe now we can relax and spend a few nights in the same campsite, rather than moving each day.

The kids aweing over the view of the Grand Canyon, which they nicknamed, "The Big Ditch".

A panoramic view of the Grand Canyon.

We spent the day taking the shuttle bus to different viewpoints along the south rim. From this viewpoint, we could see the Colorado river, which is about 5000 feet below us. We even spotted some rafts heading down river.

Our campsite at the south rim. The kids slept in the tent while we were in the RV.

All this natural beauty around them and what do they do? Play with Legos and video games on the DS. What is it with this generation? (:-).

A female elk and a young calf we saw along the road in the park. We went to the campfire program in the campground. The first two nights, bull elk came and growsed on trees. There I was with no camera to photograph them. The third night, I took my camera and long lens, but the elk did not show up. Life is not fair!

Another day of sightseeing. Zack is checking out the view above where the Kaibab Trail comes in to the south rim.

A ranger is leading a hike on the KaibabTrail. The trail looks pretty steep and imposing. Don't try it if you are afraid of heights. The trail goes to Phantom Ranch on the Colorado River and then up to the north rim.

The other major trail connecting the south rim with the Colorado River is the Bright Angel Trail. A lot of switch backs and a steep trail is waiting for those who try it.

Zack on the edge. Don't jump, Zack! Your mother will never forgive us!

A final look at the Grand Canyon on our way to Zion National Park.
