Playa las Glorias
Nov. 19-21
Our next stop was Playa las Glorias, a small village about 30 miles south of
Guasave. "Playa" in Spanish means "beach", which is where our campground was -
right at the beach on the Sea of Cortez (Gulf of California).
Somehow, we got the 'front row seats"; Gordon's motor home is on the right
and ours is to the left of his. Ed and Pat's motor home is right behind ours.
The restaurant and pool area of our campground is to the left of the motor
homes.
The view out the window of our motor home. I was surprised at how much
surf there was. I guess it is because we are on the eastern side of the Gulf and
the prevailing winds blows to the east, building up waves that travel easterly.
The grounds in our campground.
We could watch pelicans flying along the crest of waves; they
seemed to fly in groups of three or four. I suppose they are looking for
"lunch".
Pelicans near a fishing dock, where we started a boat tour to
Bird Island and Shell Island; the area is a federal bird refuge.
Heading out on our boat tour. Our wagonmaster, Juan, is in the
front row on the right, holding a walkie talkie to communicate with our boat.
Next to Juan is a marine biologist who led the tour.
We landed on Bird Island, which is covered with mangroves; they
are only about chest high, so we could get a close-up view of the birds on their
nests; these are cormorants and a blue heron.
we could even see right into some of the nests. This is a baby
cormorant.
"Mama! Where's my food? I am hungry!"
There are no predators on Bird Island, so the birds don't have
much fear of humans. This blue heron allowed us to get pretty close.
But only so close, and then it took off.
After Bird Island we took the boats over to Shell Island for a
shore lunch. Along the way we saw dolphins playing in the sea. But we couldn't
get close so I don't have any pictures of them.
The setting sun, as seen from our campsite.
Next we head to Alamos, which is a inland colonial town north from here.
