Touring Germany with Pat and Ed
We took a break in our visit to Neckarelz so that Pat and Nancy could do some genealogy research at the archives in Karlsruhe. We stayed in a hotel outside Karlsruhe and visited Eppingen. Maria Catharina Kamm had emigrated to America from Eppingen before 1723 with her parents. She met Johann Philipp in Philadelphia and they were married by1731.
Eppingen, with the Pfeifferturm, which dates from the beginning of the 13th
century. It was part of the wall surrounding the old section of the town. Like
most towns in Germany, the old town walls have been removed to allow the town to
expand.
We had dinner in a restaurant where we toasted Maria Kamm.
After the Emmert family "reunion" in Neckarelz, we left there and headed
north to take a cruise on the Rhine. The Rhine is well known for its vineyards
on the banks and old castles.
Our next stop was the Mosel river, which is also well known for
its wines and picturesque scenery.
Of particular interest to us was the Carl Emert winery in Traben-Trarbach on
the Mosel river. As far as we know, the Emert family is unrelated to our Emmerts.
Their wines are very good.

After visiting the Mosel area we headed to Gross-Felda, which is north east of Frankfurt, to visit with a pilot friend of Ed and Pat. After a couple of pleasant days with him, Ed and Pat took us to Frankfurt so Nancy and I could pick up our rental car and head out on our own. Ed and Pat were to return to the U.S. in the next day or two.
