South to Florida

Nov. 4 - 19, 2002

For our fall RV trip we headed to Florida so Gil could attend the APS Plasma Physics meeting in Orlando. That would give us the opportunity to see some of the Gulf Coast on the way to Florida and the Atlantic coast on the way back. Why is Gil going to a plasma physics meeting when he is retired? Having been the department chair for the last 9 years before retiring, he didn't have much time for research. Hence, this will give him the opportunity to: (1) see research colleagues and friends that he hasn't seen for several years, (2) catch up (to some extent) on recent developments in the field, and (3) perhaps give him some ideas for research to do as a "hobby" in his retirement.  At least that is the way he explains it. Maybe it was really to see his "old drinking buddies" again.

Our route:

Our route was south to the Gulf coast in Mississippi and the east along the Gulf coast to Florida. After the meeting in Orlando, we headed north along the Atlantic coast as far as Charleston, SC, where we turned to the northwest and crossed over the Smoky Mountains into Tennessee. We then went north to Indianapolis, west to Bloomington-Normal, IL and north again to Madison.
