On the Way to Salt Lake City
After the rally was over, we headed towards Salt Lake City. We had plenty of time to get there, since were were leaving late Friday morning and the Family History Library is closed on Sunday. So we planned on a leisurely 3 day journey to travel the 500 miles. We headed west over Trail Ridge Road (again) and followed U.S. 40; this was the main east-west route before the interstates were put in. Now it is a secondary route, and a little bit like stepping back in time. I had driven U.S. 40 from Sacramento to St. Louis in 1961, so it was interesting to see parts of it again.
The Yampa River near Hayden, CO. The aspen trees were in full
color.
Dinosaur National Monument, near the Utah-Colorado border. A
large number of dinosaur fossils were discovered here in the early part of the
20th century. Many of them were excavated and taken to museums around the
country. The area became a national monument to preserve and protect the
remaining fossils. A visitor center was built to enclose a rock face that still
contains a large number of dinosaur bones.
Next stop - Salt Lake City.
