Fort Nelson to Muncho Lake
June 22-23, 2015

After Fort Nelson the highway heads west into the mountains of British Columbia. We also ran into a long road construction work zone with delays waiting for a pilot car, and driving on gravel. The Alaska highway is officially paved the entire length, but there are significant gravel sections where the road is being repaired. We are now far enough north that you also have to watch out for gravel breaks in the pavement due to frost heaving.  On the paved sections you can drive 55 - 60 mph, but you had better slow down to 35 - 40 when approaching a gravel break.

Stone Mountain Provincial Park is the home of these stone sheep; they come to the highway to lick the salt.

A couple of ewes and a lamb licking the salt.

Some stone sheep in their more natural environment. It was a steep cliff, but they moved around with the greatest of ease.

Muncho Lake is a beautiful  place to stop and spend the night, or lay over for a day.  The highway runs right along the eastern shore.

We found a great campsite right along the shore.

Kayaking on Muncho Lake. The weather was more cooperative than it was seven years ago when a storm came in and prevented us from kayaking here.

Sunset on Lake Muncho. This picture was taken at 10:23 pm. We are far enough north that the days are noticeably longer.

Tomorrow we head for the Liard Hot Springs to have a nice warm soak.
