Montana Photo Safari
June 8-10, 2015
The reason for coming over the
Beartooth Highway, other than the fantastic scenery, was that we were
heading to a photography workshop put together by Mike Wendland (of
Roadtreking.com). Mornings were spent listening to seminars on various
photography subjects, while we were free in the afternoons to go hiking
and practice our landscape and wildlife photography. The instructors
for this experience were (mostly) professional photographers, some of
whom worked for Roadtrek.
One surprise of the workshop was that we were each given a solar
cooker, courtesy of Roadtrek, Inc. It is basically a long vacuum
bottle designed to absorb solar rays; surrounding the bottle is a
couple of parabolic shaped reflectors to increase the amount of
sunlight the tube receives. We had a cook-off one evening where people
were supposed to use the solar cooker to make food for a potluck
dinner. Unfortunately, the weather was cloudy and then it started to
rain. Some people were smart enough to start the cooker early enough so
that the food was ready by dinner time.
One participant showing the cooker with the cooking tube extracted. He
managed to cook chicken in it, although it took 2 hours because of the
cloudy weather. We were late in starting our food, so it didn't get done
in time for the dinner. We did cook successfully with it the next night
in Great Falls, MT, where the weather was more cooperative.
