The Tetons
June 16, 2008

We have been many times to the Tetons, but we keep coming back. I guess these are our favorite mountains. What is most impressive is how they rise straight up 6,000 feet above Jackson Hole, with no foothills in the way to spoil the view of the range.

Northern Teton range

We woke to a beautiful view of the Tetons reflecting in Jackson Lake. Mt. Moran is the highest peak in this view. There is more snow in the mountains than we have seen before. Our other trips here have been later in the summer so the snow has had more time to melt. There were even snow banks in our campground.

A view of Mt. Moran reflecting in the Snake river, which has its start at Jackson Lake and flows through Jackson Hole.

buffalo

Buffalo roam the flats in the park; this one seemed to think I was interrupting his breakfast.

ranching in Jackson Hole

Jackson Hole was ranched, many old fences like this are to be seen.  Grand Teton is the high peak in the middle.

The meandering Snake River in the foreground, with the Tetons looming over them. See, there really are no foothills!

chapel of the transfiguration

The Chapel of the Transfiguration has a magnificent location. Now, I could go to church here! Inside, there is a window at the front of the sanctuary that allows the parishioners to look directly out on the Tetons. It must make it hard to concentrate on the sermon!

Pronghorn

An antelope (more properly called pronghorn) eying me cautiously as I try to get closer for a better picture.

Cascade canyon

Jenny Lake with a view up Cascade Canyon. We once did a backpack trip where we came out through this canyon. That was one of my favorite backpack trips.

Tomorrow we head further north, through Yellowstone into Idaho and Montana.
