Back into the Smoke

Aug. 12-15

After Hyder we headed back up the Glacier Highway to the Cassiar Highway and camped at Meziadin Provincial Park. This is a very pretty park with a nice lake fringed by mountains. It was time to put the kayak back into the water and do some paddling.

We came upon a beaver that allowed us to get fairly close before slapping its tail against the water (a warning to other beavers - although we didn't see any others) and diving.

Our route from here took us south on the Cassiar Highway to the Yellowhead Highway and then east on the Yellowhead to Jasper National Park. There wasn't much of interest along the way, so we concentrated on driving, and did not do much sightseeing.

Our van was really dirty from driving on dirt and gravel roads, so we took advantage of the free RV wash offered one of the campgrounds we stayed in to hose it down. We should not be hitting much in the way of gravel or dirt roads after this, so hopefully we don't have to clean it again until we get home.

As we approached the continental divide at the Alberta border, we got back into forest fire smoke that obscured all the beautiful views we should have been seeing. It turned out that they were doing a prescribed burn in the area. What a bummer!

This brings us to Jasper National Park where we will spend a few days. We hope the smoke clears soon.
